Question 89 Electra Glide Tour Pak Detach Kit

Hey guys,

I just bought an 89' Electra Glide Ultra Classic, I'm new to the HD world but I saw that kits are made to allow the rear Tour Pak to disconnect easily with a kit that is sold. I heard that this kit isnt made for the older bikes such as mine, is this true? Has anyone had good luck with a specific brand of kit that they'd suggest i look into?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

You can purchase the H-D detatch kit for the 97' and up Electra Glide and with some minor modifacations you make it work for the frame and fender struts. You can make a custom one , or modify the existing hard bolted unit on your 89 to be removeable. The last option is what I did when i had my 89. It took a little fab work to make it happen, but it worked well for the many years that I rode that bike.

There is no direct bolt in, if fabricating is not your thing, your best bet is to go with the 97 and up quick detach setup and bring it to a shop where they can tweak it to make it work.

If you search for this topic in the EVO forum, you will see several folks that have made it work and thier other solutions as well. Enjoy your 89 !

Thanks 89FLHT! Thats very helpful to know. I would love to have my King Tour Pak removable, and it sounds like I will go with the 97 and up kit and do the modifications. Ill be sure to check out the EVO forum and see what others say about the details regarding the modifications that need to be made. Thanks again!!

OR, you can just bolt and unbolt it.
takes about 30 minutes a time.

most roll up the wiring and put it under the seat.

unbolt to tour pak from the mount- get someone to steady it for you.

unbolt the mount from the fender rails.

you'll need to figure out the plate mount, all kinds of options.

Hey Mike,

Do you know of any connector that happens to work particularly well with the wires for the lights and antenna? thinking that if I am to just bolt and unbolt the tour pak; it may make it easier to have connectors on the wires. Curious as to if you know of any that you or others may have used.

Thanks again!

I use flat 4 trailer connector.

spliced in under the seat, the pins are

ground

run lights
brake lights

and I wire in an aux- which I use to power a usb charger and some other junk.

the $12 pepboys trailer plug has leds so I can see if there is a problem... and I have velcro wrapped around the plug, and my left upper shock. that is where I stick it when not used.

of course it is weather proof.

and the other end is wired inside the tour pak.

when the T/P is in place I just plug it in.

some use an am/fm/wb antenna inside the fairing. I use a mount inboard of my left saddlebag and a rubber $8 pepboys stubby.

I don't use the CB so I don't have that concern.

Very nice Mike. Thank you for the tips there! Good idea about the USB charger in the tour pak... I like that! May put one of those on my bike too!

Glad that I now have a way of taking my tour pak off and on with ease. I'm a young guy and although the tour pak sure has alot of functionality to it, I think the temporary removal of the tour pak would match my age! (leaves the bike with the Street Glide look).

Thanks again Mike! Youve been really helpful!
