Removed packing from Cobra mufflers
I know the sound of the pipe doesn't make it run any better, but I like to hear my V-Twin a little bit.I had the Cobras installed before I took delivery of the bike and the sound pretty good, but still just a little weak for my taste. So during one the many rain days that we've had here in the last couple of weeks I decided to remove the sheet of fiber packing wrap that surrounds the baffles,I was hoping that this wasn't going to effect the performance of the bike.So after re-installing the baffles and did a test fire it made a big change in the sound and I'm quite happy with the sound. The next day I did a 25mile ride around town and all went well no de cel pop or noticeable loss of performance.Did 200 miles yesterday with no problems and got a lot compliments on the sound of the bike.Avg. 41 mpg and that's running it pretty hard.P.S.did run it without the the baffles for a minute and thought I was going to break every window garage(WOW)I guess the baffles create enough back pressure allowing the bike to run with no noticeable change.By removing the baffles which way will it go lean or rich? Should I pull the plugs to get an eyeball on them?

I recently removed the fiber wrap from the baffles on my Klock Werks muffs. Replaced it with steel wool, wrapped the baffle with the steel wool and sinched down with the original wire, and some additional wire. Made a huuuge difference, bike got real snappy and loud. Hmmmm So I though well maybe this is too restrictive, and the exhaust is just passing straight through the baffle, like a drag pipe essentially. So I yanked the baffles back out, and spread the steel wool apart in a few places, as well as drilling two holes at the very front of the baffle, before the perforations. And used a screwdriver in these new holes, to bend the metal a little bit to make these holes catch exhaust air, and force it up into the void between the baffle and the 4" muffler body. Then it works its way back through the steel wool packing, and exits. And that made a huuge difference again, quited the bike wayyyy down, like to the point that I cant hear the exhaust while going anywhere over around 40 mph.
Theres alot of tinkering, and changes that can be made to these mufflers with removable packing. Very cool to be able to modify the sound and performance with various different packing materials and various densities of that packing and so-on.
Anyways I know that was long winded, but ive been looking all over for info on what other guys have done to theirs to achieve what they were after, but it dosent seem like theres alot of guys doing these types of mods to there mufflers.

Unpacking and repacking
I had a set of modified SE slip-ons that I put Big City Thunder baffles in, scrapped the mesh stuff SE had put my own metal mesh in 5 years ago. Worked perfectly then I added an air filter and head pipes with a DoBeck TFI. All good for another year... Recently on a run about 10 of were doing 115 for a long stretch with Passengers and luggage and I blew out my baffles. Not wanting to spend a lot of money I bought the 3" Cobra's. With Cobra head pipes already they are great, never adjust a thing by Harley, just the TFI as it was preset. Great to read these articles, it confirms my mods were neither bad or harmful and no adjustments under the hood. I am looking forward to taking out the fiberglass, looking at the inside config and getting a couple notches louder. One thing with the 3" cobra's is I can adjust where the slash is, down, side, etc... Thanks for the postings, ride fast, ride well.
