The idea and concept of a debit card is completely foriegn to me and seems like a short-term record keeping nightmare. Kind of like the old days when you used to write checks - if you forget to make an entry, then how much money do you really have. A debit card is like writing checks and never making an entry - I'd never know precisely how much money I had available at any given time.
Banks prefer debit vs credit cards as fees for transaction are lower, (1+% vs. 2 to 4% dependent on card ), (amex highest )

The debit card agreement give the bank direct access to the funds in your account to cover the Estimated charges you might incur and also allows the bank to encumber excess funds for several days to cover unknown charges thus tying up your cash and in essence holding it on the banks ledger as a deposit or excess capital there for bank use overnight.

Debit cards also create xtra fees for the bank as accounts are more likely to be overdrafted thus generating banks fees.

Summary- its 2015, get a credit card, learn how to use it, get rid of the debit card, pay your balance off monthly and understand its easier to dispute a credit card than a debit card and using other peoples money (OPM ) is far better than using your money.

For many years I paid everything in cash only. A few years ago I tried to get a credit card, and was denied. Not because of bad credit history, it was NO credit history. I went to my bank and the gal there said it was like I was a credit ghost. She recommended getting a secured card for starters and go from there. Fast forward to today, I'm good to go.

Prior to this though, I rented cars with my debit card. HD dealer said no problem putting it on my debit card either. Only stipulation was the funds would be held till after the rental period and bike returned. The funds would be tied up for up to 10 days afterward depending on my bank. If your ok with that, you should be good.
