Default Fuel guage started acting up.

Yesterday as I was riding along on my 09 SG I noticed my fuel gauge moving around as I would corner, accelerate, and stop. It is not a slow movement but a quick reaction to the fuel moving around in the tank. I checked it today by turning on the ignition and shaking the bike and it is doing it with the bike not running also. Ideas as to fixing this annoying thing would be appreciated.

Sounds like the sending unit to me. Mine Doesn't move around like yours but it almost always reads full and the needle randomly moves up and down. I will be replacing my sending unit soon.

OP, sounds like it may be doing what it is supposed to...try not staring at your gauges when riding...the fuel gauge is really just a rough indication of level.

If it is full, you don't have to worry about it for 2.5 hours of riding or more.

But for both of you with concerns; you may have a fuel line jammed up against the float and that fuel line can move with the bike and push the float OR it can jam the float and keep it from moving.

have a look

It's tough not to notice it as it moves like a tach. Worked fine for 18000 miles and not anymore.

A while back when I had my 07 SG I had a similar issue. Turned out that it was simply the connection to the gauge was loose, most likely from a previous time I had the fairing off. Take off the fairing and check the connections.

Can the wires be accessed thru the headlight hole with the headlight removed?

I don't believe so. It would be much easier to remove the fairing. It is only 6 screws - just have someone ready to unplug the headlight on your first go at it. This is not an area to be intimidated by at all. Very easy to do, especially on a StreetGlide.
