do not use a bicycle or other large bore pump, you'll blow out the seals and trash the shocks.
I use SG shocks on my 09 EG Classic, solo, I run 7 pounds- with riding gear I weigh about 235 and probably carry 20 pounds of crap in the saddlebags.
more weight, such as a passenger i add more air.

Go to your manual as it gives a table for correct air pressures for specific weight ranges.
BTW many guys on here will tell you to run a higher air pressure than what the charts will tell you.
That is because the older bikes had shocks that needed higher pressure than the new bikes.
And some of these guys don't realize that the pressure tables have changed.

I finally broke down and bought the pump today. I am glad I did. Yeah, its pricey, but its nice having the gauge right there, being able to bleed off a lb of air (or less) at a time, and not losing air when you disconnect it. My shocks were down to 0, pumped it back up to 20# in just a few pumps of the handle.
If you can at all save up for it, do it. Or yeah, look for a used on ebay or craigslist.
