Default New Tires 10+ Touring

I have just over 17k miles on my 10 flhx original dunlops, d407r and d408f. Im past due for some new tread but dealership wants 649 out the door for front and rear installed.

Im wondering if I can save a bunch by doing it myself. How hard is it to change out rear? Any step by step guides from those that have done this on a 2010 street glide?

Im thinking if I can just drop the tires, bring em to a local shop for mounting and balancing, I should be good to go.

Back in the day it was a breeze to drop the tires, take it to a local indy and have them mount and balance, check bearings and throw her back on.
Guys at dealer were saying its much much more involved on a touring bike.

Also, where to buy these tires online at a good price? Im having no luck at all. Appreciate any feedback.

Thanks in advance.

Don't see much difference than "back in the day" in changing a tire unless you've got ABS. If so, just watch how everything comes off and put it back the same way. Shop manual has all the info.

I got 20k on the OEM tires for my 2010 FLHX.
My reaction was the same as yours, I had never done it, but could not see pulling the trigger on that much cash to have somebody else do it.
If you have the service manual, it shows how the assembly is put together.
Not as hard as one would think, just make sure the ABS cable is on straight.

I ordered an American Elite 16" for the rear, but had to get the 18" OEM for the front.
A Dunlop rep in Sturgis told me that an 18" American Elite should be on the market this fall. These tires last at least twice as long as any other tires I have used. Several online stores selling them, just google American Elite. Good luck.

+1 on Jake Wilson, I got the front AE TMD for 124. Went to Discount for the rear, 104 for it. Had them both mounted and ballanced for 60 bux. A far cry from almost 650.

Thanks for the feedback. I found a set of american elites for $306.
Glide2005, whats TMD and Discount? Do you have links?
Also, are the AE that much better than stock 407 and 408 or just a good replacement ?
Ready to pull the trigger and just want to make sure Im getting the best I can for the money.
Thanks again.

edit: my front tire is a Dunlop 408 130/70B-17 63H and the American Elite I found on sale is a 130/80B-17 65H
Will this still work on my rim or is this a problem?

17k on tires? why would you want to replace a tire that has done so well? My Indy says stay with Stock Dunlops, best tire for the weight of a touring. And he only charges 30 bucks labor to change out rear.

I did lookup the MC II's. They don't make front tire for 2010 street glides. I even contacted michillin and they have no plans on making one. Hard to believe they would leave out harleys best selling model front tire size.

A bit on tire sizes. 130/70B-17 means your tire is 130mm wide/ 70% of width=sidewall height-17" wheel. The other numbers and letters refer to how it is constructed. B=black side wall W=white stripe WWW=Wide white wall
