Default Crap..

So..

Cruising down the highway.. I went over a bump/joint in the road and my radio shuts down. No clock, no power. I checked the fuse, a-ok. It has been one of those weeks. Anyone have this experience before I start troubleshooting? May save me some time.

Thanks all,
whiskers

Mine did the same thing. It was blowing the 15 amp memory fuse. As with several others on here the problem was a wire shorted in the wire harness about 6 inches before the radio where the bundle of wires contacts the fairing bracket. Found broken fairing brackets and I think that caused excessive vibration at that point. Look very closely to see the worn wire.

Replace the fuse anyway, sometimes they show good but are not.

Well.. again.. the forum comes through. Earlier I checked the Radio fuse and that was fine, but you guys got me thinking, so I went back and found that the radio mem fuse was blown. A month ago I went through and replaced all the fuses since they were aging and didn't replace this one since I ran out of spares. So, the radio is back. I plan to check the harness for the wire issue anyway, it wouldn't hurt. Thanks again.

You're a lucky one with just the fuse failing. That symptom usually means the speaker circuit board has cracked.

I think the issue is definitely the short 6" in on the harness. I turned it on this morning and got lots of popping from the speakers when the motor is running. If I turn the wheel to the right, it's worse, all the way to the left and no issues. Now, when I run it in Access I don't seem to get the noise from the speakers when turning the wheel.

So, this weekend, I'll be taking the fairing off tracking down the problem.

I wouldn't mind an aftermarket upgrade as long as I could find one that can withstand rain and the occasional spray from the hose. I'd like to add satellite, but not at H-D prices.

Do you happen to know which wire it was? Color would be nice. .

I have never heard of replacing fuses because they are "aging".
