Default Relocate air temp sensor 74419-96

Has anyone relocated their air temp sensor 74419-96 or 74419-96A in the batwing fairing to somewhere where it can actually touch outside air? While fixing a rattle in my batwing I came across the sensor and am thinking of extending the harness (or making an extension) and moving the sensor so it can get airflow and give a real reading for a change.

Any thoughts on this?

I believe it has been shifted a few times by HD. on my 09 it is on the leftside of the neck where it gets pretty good updraft.

fairly useless device though!

I should find mine as I had to have it replaced when it quit working, and they said it was "missing".

Hey Bulldog -- I was thinking about doing this also! I just got a 2012 Ultra Limited and it seems that the temp gauge always reads at least 90 degrees or more, regardless of the outside air temp. Granted, it's been around 90 during the day, but at night it's been dropping into the low 70s here. Keep us posted as to where you end up mounting the sensor and how well it works...

Did the best mod ever today, ditched that useless gauge for an oil temp gauge!!!

I feel knowing the temp of the oil might be more important than knowing what it is outside since i'm there anyways!!

Yep, I relocated mine to a workbench drawer years ago and installed a compass to replace it.

JMO, but an oil temp gage is almost as useless as the air temp gage.

couldn't figure out how to get the picture up so here is the link. Nav power cord went out on me so I had to use Plan B out of SF... LOL!

went digital and it is very accurate. Once in a while, it will not show due to bright sunlight but it is not often. Much much better than stock.

I moved the sensor to outside and near the lower triple tree. It read the higher temps better but was terrible on the colder temps. Finally put in an oil temp gauge.
