Really on the fence for buying Extended Warranty
#31
I plan to buy it but will shop around for it and expect to get it for probably at least 1/3 less than the first quote I get. I expect it to cost between 1-2 times the one year insurance premium on the bike which I will gladly pay expecting not to use it. It is more likely I will get benefit from the ESP than from the insurance. I don't buy them on anything else but in this case I believe it's worth the gamble.

Compensator not covered?
First off, thanks for all the replies, it really helps in making a decision.
I got a brochure about the HD Extended Service Plan from a dealer and I was looking at all the covered items.
One thing I noticed is that it doesn't list the "Compensator" as being covered? Do they consider the Compensator as a "wear item"?
All the guys having Compensator problems is one of the reasons I was considering the Extended Warranty.

H-D dealers, like auto dealers, push these extended warranties on you when you are in the finance office and you are all excited about your new purchase and not really thinking logically. If you were going to get out of it more than you put in, why would the dealer even offer it (it would be a money loser for them if it were true) much less PUSH hard to get you to buy it. Read Consumer Reports or any other consumer oriented analysis and they will tell you they are a WASTE of money. You are paying handsomely now for repairs you will likely NEVER need. The dealer knows that and is making a very safe bet on the soundness of their own product. The covered items will not fail during the extended warranty period. They know it. You should believe it.

A guy in Calgary has on 05 FXWG iirc and has over 200,000 miles on it, he rides year round there in the Great White North.
Mother HD even built a new motor for him and installed and all for the princely sum of $50.00 deductible among other things of course.
He did have to wait a few weeks last year for a clutch pack and compensator issue though.
Google Calgary56 and see what you come up with.
Just my opinion cause it is easier spending your money than mine.

Pure logic says don't buy it because pure logic says the only reason it's offered is because it's a money maker for the company. Pure logic is absolutely correct in a vacuum. This is the real world. There are multiple factors that go into it beyond pure logic.
Comparing this to the ESP for a flat screen is silly. Best Buy offers 2 or at most 3 years on the flat screen. The flat screen goes home and sits. Harleys go bouncing down the road causing all sorts of commotion with delicate electronics on the bike as well as generally jostling everything.
Harley doesn't give just 2 or maybe 3 years, although that's an option, they give 5 years with an ability to renew. That is an entirely different ESP. Now, if you only ride 3-4k miles a year it may not be a good gamble but for someone who rides a thousand miles a month or more average there's a fair chance it will pay for itself. In the end, it's each individual's own decision and they shouldn't be made to feel bad for their thoughts or decision.

When I originally bought my motorcycle I was told if I financed it I -had- to put warranty on it.
Well i've pretty much adjusted everything and have had a lot of fun doing it. I did have stress too. Rebuilding the 120R wasn't cheap. But I think I came out with even more upgrades.
If you're staying stock or playing in the "green light" area of the SE catalog sure get that warranty for piece of mind.
I tried to use warranty when the 120r went and all that happened was I received a letter in the mail eliminating coverage for the drivetrain.
Have a blast what ever you choose.

08 RG 60K + miles. Never had any trouble with it till I hit 40K in between 40 & 50K and 1 yr. I had to by Stator, Compensator, Voltage Regulator, Rear brake switch, Fuel pump/filter housing. All work was done at separate times. Had I got the extended warranty it would have paid for its self by now. Another thing to consider.
If you do any road trips any problem comes from the travel budget.
