First off, if you call Jim Palmer @ Kutter HD, you'll be able to take a huge chunk off of that price.

For me, the ESP on a newer Ultra is no brainer. Just too many things to go wrong on these newer bikes...... and things are going wrong. For me, I've had issues with the IPB, Wheel bearings, comp...plus a hodgepodge of minor electrical and stereo issues. The ESP is mostly paid for itself and I still have 4 years left. By the end of my ESP my bike should have somewhere around 70K on it. I'm betting that the ESP will more than pay for itself.

Also, I'm lucky in that I don't get any BS from my local dealer, Sound HD. They basically have the attititude of "Just ride it and if something breaks, we'll fix it."

Never bought one, never needed one.

I figure that with all the money I've NOT spent of extended warranties for TVs, appliances, phones, scooters, etc, that if and when I do have a major expense to deal with, I'm still ahead.

I couldn't agree more, I was going to something like what you said.

If extended warranties were not money makers for the companies offering them, they would not be available.

Shop that price around, I just paid $1450 plus $209 for the tire and wheel on the same bike for the same 7 year here in Columbus, Ohio

PM me actualy I will give you the ladies name and number at the local dealer

My 09 I traded in lost a lifter at 29k, grenaded the entire motor at 2 years and 4 months old. If I hadnt bought the extended coverage, I would have been out $7500. It saved me, and thats why I bought it again on my new bike.

Its worth it, especially on the touring bikes. Buy it, but shop that price

many of the common mods that riders do, void the typical extended warranty- you have to read through the contract carefully ( and most contracts are not available to review until you are sitting in their office with your check book) talking about pipes, cams, tuners etc.

- if you are bound to keep your bike factory stock and are able to document all service intervals this could be a good idea

the warranties, while often sold through H-D dealerships are 3rd party...so what happens if they go out of business.

and who provides warranty repair services...what happens if you are 2000 miles from home?

just a couple of things to think about

that $2600 is a fair chunk of change

Yea, that's something to think about, nothing major, but I've changed the Bars and done a Stage 1. Would suck to pay for an Extended Warranty and then find out the claim is denied due to the bike not being stock.

In the electronics industry, retailers pay out 6 cents for every dollar taken in for an extended warranty. With those odds, that’s a huge profit margin for them. It’s also why the extended warranty is now offered for just about every product ever sold. Again, this is only representative of the electronics industry and has nothing to do with motorcycles. But it does hint at the odds of failure. Like everything else in life, you have do your own risk analysis and determine where you are comfortable. Extended warranties are nice when you really need them, but the odds of needing it during its coverage period are still fairly low IMO. I usually don't buy them.
I agree with you, and I never buy Extended Warranties usually, but there is just something knawing at me about buying one for the Harley.

I honestly was less concerned about the mechanical and more concerned about electrical.

I know it is a tough decision - good luck. But do shop around - Jim at Kutter's HD offers some good deals.
Thanks, if I decide to get one, I'll give Jim a call, Kutters isn't that far from me if they need to inspect the bike.

Sounds like you made a great decision!

Usually I would totally agree with you, just something about the Harley. I guess I'm just not that confident that it will be problem free for 7-years, and if I do have a problem, it's gonna be a "High Dollar" problem.

Exactly the kind of thing I'm concerned with.

The cost of an extended warranty is a high dollar problem. That's like buying a bike straight off the showroom floor with a guaranteed $1500 problem.

It's extraordinarily unlikely that you will recoup the cost of the extended warranty in repairs. They are structured that way and that is why the dealer (and every manufacturer of every other product on the planet) now pushes them hard. It is simply extra profit for the dealer. I ALWAYS turn them down.

I have 07 UC and my wife's 08 UC on my 07 I put about 13to14K miles a year ESP paid it self about 3 times but on 08 she put about 5 to 6K miles a year and it was waste of money. If you plan on riding the crap out of it buy the ESP otherwise it's waste of money.

If you want them fixing it buy it. However in my opinion you will do a better job then them and unless you blow it up you will never ever put $2000 in part in it. Most repairs they do they break even on with your copay anyway which you also need to factor in.
