Default Installing Apes...To Pull The Tank or Not to Pull The Tank

Well I just finished up the electrical extensions for my 16" Carlini's and all my cables should be here wednesday. In eyeballing the task ahead, I'm not sure so I thought I'd ask the people who have done this already. Do I need to pull the tank on my '05 RKC to change the throttle and idle cables? I'd really rather not because its full and from what I've read, its a PITA, but if I have to, I will do it now so I'm ready when the cables arrive. Thanks!!

Mine is a 2010 RK and I didn't pull the tank to put on WO502s. I did extend the clutch cable and the brake lines.

your '10 model also doesn't have throttle or idle cables, the OPs does. If it is anything like my Crossbones, you will have to at least move the tank. Not sure if it is do-able on the touring bikes, but instead of completely removing th tank on my softail, we unbolted it, laid a towel on the frame and very carefully slid it back enough to get to the stuff we needed. IIRC my wiring connections were under there as well.

Nah just cover the tank real good. Make sure the bike is upright on a jack or wheel chock.

I have heard (on this forum) that you can loosen the tank to gain some space and use the old cables to "pull" the new ones into place. Never done it myself, but it sure sounds good!

Thanks everyone! Cables should be here wednesday! I'll keep you posted! Electical wasn't as easy to run in the bars as my beach bars were, but with a little help from the girlfriend, we got it done and it came out great! I'll keep ya posted!!

Well I didn't have to remove the tank. Hell, I didn't even need to unbolt it.....now the clutch cable change is a whole different story!!! Still knee deep in that one!!

You don't have to pull the tank off. Just unfasten the front bolt, lift it and put a piece of wood underneath until you finish the work. You have to undo the air filter to reach to the end of the accel. cables. My 2002 FLHRI has two cables. It is not complicated if you have some tech abilities. Good luck!
