Just to answer the question on how to put stud back in try double nutting the stud, and turning the outer most nut. That should get the stud back in safely. Then just break loose the two nuts and unscrew outer, then inner, and thats it.

If you cross threaded the nut, then I would just replace both the stud and the nut too. Now is the time to do it!
You can use the old double nut technique to install the new stud.
