I think 14's is a good height, both for asthetics and for comfort. I've got 12" PYO monkey bars on my RK, behind a dragonfly fairing, my grips are pretty much even with the base of the windshield. 14's would have my hands just above the fairing, but not so much that it would look goofy.

My visual of "apes" is a bar that has your hands above your shoulders and mirrors on a E/Glide. Not a look I like, it is like seeing a 2-1 exhaust on an FL. Not for me. I know both may perform better, but not a tradition I want to support. If you are installing a 10-12" bar for comfort, while retaining what a model of bike is designed to be, that I can appreciate, but hands above your helmet with what I consider "ape hangers" doesnt work for me, IMHO.

Brings the bars 2" closer to driver. Also all cables are routed inside the bars.

Apes are the most comfortable to ride with and since touring bikes are made to tear up the miles it's only natural to gravitate towards apes. Don't judge them if you haven't owned them.

I don't have apes and I'm totally comfortable riding my bike for 12 hr days. Everyone says don't knock them if you haven't tried them......What am I missing?

If you can ride 12 hour days totally comfortable then maybe you have the right bars for you. I found that during/after long rides on stock my wrists were killing me!!! My back would hurt a bit too. These mini apes straighten my wrists and help with posture. They put my mirrors in a better place too. Plus they hide wires and look better. Difference is night and day. If you have cruise then the next time you have a uncongested straight-a-way put cruise on and put both hands up in a natural straightened wrist position. 10" would be about where your mirrors are.
