Looking at a Street Glide

Looking at a Street Glide
I was told that I only care about my comfort and not the better 1/2. I have a Super Glide Custom so she might be right. To keep me from being self-centered, I'm looking at a Street Glide. I have never had much to do with touring bikes. Might be time for this old Dyna guy to upgrade. Any pro/cons that I should know about when looking at a touring bike? Most of my riding is open road with a nice mix of cold, heat, wind, and rain. You get it all up north. Thanks for any pointers.

Might I suggest an electa glide. Same price as the street glide but comes with tour pac and back rest for the better half. Add a 4 point docking station and you can quickly detach the tour pack. I test rode both. the eg is a smoother ride than the sg. Now now, I have the sg. Ride mainly solo and no need for a tour pac. I would suggest lowering the windshield and adding fairing deflectors. One of the things that steered me away from the eg was the top of the wind shield weas right at my eyes. The line bothered me. Didn't think to get a different screen.

Great choice. The stock seat is FINE for my girl for 100-200+ mile days EXCEPT for harsh bump absorbtion (it's thinner near the spine vs. in front).
She also prefers the pegs vs. floorboards since she usually is wearing some sort of a heel.
You may want to consider the taller 13" shocks for more compliance and cornering clearnace as well. That's the "smoother" difference some allude to when it's the same damn bike. $100-$120 takeoffs are on eBay.
It's a stylish bike, if you want to announce you're older, er, I mean less modern styling, get the EG with bumpers, overly chromed, big lights, white walls?, and a king tour pack and arm rests.
Otherwise the 4-point docking kit and a $195 HD bag has the same capacity as the stylish and functional chopped tour pack. OR get the chopped pack for that integrated look and if you need even more space get the rack and smaller bag.
If you want a more "roomy" feeling and better steering feel, the Road Glide is the same bike otherwise. I like the guages and dash being close and other benefits, the RG also has storage in the dash.
The torque will make up for it unless in an all-out drag race, assuming similar or no mods.
I bought a 10" windshield for longer rides and I look past it down the road and through it at traffic right in front. It blocks a lot of wind.

Had the same stuff two years ago when I had an 05 sportster. Went and got a 2010 street glide. I love the bike. After our first 300 mile run the wife made me buy a new seat because the stock seat passenger pad is like 6 inches wide. We bought a luggage rack for the sissy bar and it's wide enough to put a small suitcase on. She gets a suitcase and I get a saddle bag. Haha the only thing I would say is test ride a road glide. I hated the fairing at first but it's grown on me and that batwing takes a beating in the Kansas wind. I will say I kept the sporty for about 18 months with the idea I would do road trip the SG and round town the xl. After riding the SG I never even went back. Sold the xl. Any tour bike is gonna be worth the money. Plus cruise control.... Awesome. And abs has saved me more than once with moron drivers here. Good shopping

The SG is MOCO's top seller and hotter than Georgia asphalt in the summer. With that said, I would suggest checking and taking test rides on as many of the touring models as you can. Ride two-up and ask your wife for her opinions too. Sounds like you are looking at making sure that she is as happy with the new ride as you will be. I ride a Road King and decided to go that route because of the model's versatility. I can go solo, two-up, interstate and around town rides with just a few simple add-on's. I can say that the SG/RG low profile shocks are a bit harsh at times and takes a good unit of adjustment to find the sweet spot, again solo or two-up. I have installed them on my RK for the additional benefit of 1" lowering but kept my OE shocks in case I decide to go back standard. Good luck and let us know which touring model you decided to go with,
