mine were shot at 35k miles, were replaced and am good to go, if you keep an eye on them and check them like your supposed to it will never be a problem and destroy an engine.

 

Bought my 99 ultra used a couple o years ago with 48 k on it. Its got 51k on it now.
Don't no the history on the bike, so sounds like a good winter project for cam bearings.
