Question 07 Ultra,103 w/255 cams Upgrade?Or too old?

Hey Guys,I wasnt going to do this upgrade till I traded for a newer Ultra, but decided to keep this one for a couple more years. It has 23,000 on it now,i bought it w/18500 in Oct 2011.I ride it.I've done alot of upgrades while fixing other issues, but i really like this bike and the way it looks.I would like the 103 with 255 cams or something equivalent.I'm going to do it myself as i was a GM tech for 21 yrs. What else do i need and whats ur opinion with the mileage i have?

If you like the bike, stick new cams in it and enjoy the performance improvement. You can definitely do it yourself but I recommend getting the manual from HD.

Install new cam bearings in you cases and check for wear on the oil pump while you're in there. If you have excessive wear on the pump, you may have too much run out on your crank which will mean yanking everything out but that would need corrected whether you do new cams or not; now you'll know though.

IMO, I'd do a different cam over the 255's, the 254e's are a much better cam for a 103.

Thanks,Should I just do Cams only?I've heard good results with cams only on a 96.I have the HD manual already.

The 255's are great cams, but do raise the ping and hard crank monster without compression releases, the 254E, 204 or andrews 54H or new 57H would work better in the 103". Remember to get a good tune for maximum seat o pants feel.

No, it's not too old. If it was me, I'd either do cams only, or do the 107. You'll get more bang for your buck. When I changed mine, I upgraded the oil pump. Put an oil cooler on it as well, after the upgrade.

I'm always hearing about a "better" cam choice than the 255's, and I'm sure there are, but don't be afraid of that cam, it works great in the 103. It is a great choice for someone not wanting to hotrod your bike, the low end torque is awesome. I can ride two-up (2012 RK) with my wife at 60 MPH in 6th gear without any hint of lugging, unless of course I hit some good hills.

I just wanted to put this plug in for the 255's, I like em, and would do it over again in a heartbeat.

To answer your question, no, it's not too old, do it and have a ball. Besides, you are doing the wrenching and it won't break the bank doing the upgrades you want by doing it yourself. Have fun, and good luck, no matter which way you go.

Definitely not too old. I would look into the Fuel Moto 107 kit before committing to the 103. Lots of info and feedback on this upgrade in this forum.

I have 70000 miles on my 07, i put Andrews 26h at about 50000 and a Power Commander III and it woke it up...I will run it until it doesn't run anymore then i will upgrade to a new motor or rebuild...I have a little while left to pay and then it will be mine...I might trike it as i am having some Knee issues with RA...
