1999 Road King Classic Valvetrain clatter
Howdy,
I have a 1999 FLHRCI. It has mostly stock motor as far as I know. M/M inj. and it has a PCII installed. True dual. Bought it with 8k! (Garage King) So I am getting a lot of noise from the rockerbox and some from the cam chest. Scoped it. Lifters and rods(someone put adjustables and not sure what else they did) sound good. Broke open the cam chest. Has spring tensioners, shoes look great! not sure if they did a cam mod at this point. Chains are old style still. Put new HD plugs, ran some "cleaner" through the crank, and changed oil(AMSOIL) and a new K&N filter. Running 91 fuel. At the top end of my shift when really getting on it I get a lot of valve ping. At idle it will die, sometimes dies when slowing down between gears(again idle) Pulled new plugs after 20 minutes and they were black already(carbon, not oil black) Every other aspect of the bike is sweeeet and spot on!! So here is where I am, still lots of rocker and cam chain noise, burning rich, poor idle. I am wondering if it is the PCII causing a burn/timing issue that is giving me all the noise...what say others? Should I just snip the wires and install a FI2000? Thanks!

Give it a mile or two
Well I figured out how to adjust my ''antique'' PCII. Turns out it was tuned all the way up on "rich". Turned it down to second LED above "lean". Running better, a little less power, waaay cooler, quite a bit quieter, and idling way better..gonna give it a mile or two and tweek. May still opt for an FI2000. Still a little concerned about rocker noise. I think after 12 years, the front rubber mount may need replaced, seams a little mushy. But what do I know, I was on a rigid sporty before. (I still catch myself wanting to shift with my right foot..hehe)

oh well
So on Monday, I guess it will be a call to DynaJet to see if there is a map or something for the PCII, otherwise it's a trip to the indy if no one has any other ideas about my top-end noise. Would have liked to fix it in my own garage, but I would rather be riding and not burning up some parts.

So what is your actual question?
Tuning the PCII or the valve clatter?
Last I heard, yes there are maps, so go to the PC website and look. But I don't use it so not sure
Valve train
Well best thing:
Do you have the EVO or the TC88 engine?
If TC88 upgrade to the newer style cam plate and chain and tensioners.
They are hydraulically controlled versus the constant spring tension.
Two remove the rocker covers verify the rocker shafts are correctly installed (tightened bolts etc) and no damage.
Then verify the the correct clearances. If wrong make the adjustments.
If this works fine.
If not the lifters may not be maintaining pressure and need replaced.

Here is the website on Dynojet that has the maps
http://www.powercommander.com/powerc...dl=313&yr=1999
You'll need the software to read, upload to the PCII, and tune. You can find that here:
http://www.powercommander.com/powerc...dType=PC-Older
Just match up the air cleaner, pipes, and cam and other mods done, and find the correct map.
