Default Cam Swap and Warranty

If anyone other than a dealer does a cam swap on my 2012 FLHTK, does it void the 2 year manufactures warranty? If they are new "take off" cams that are installed, what about the warranty? Would a dealer install the new "take off" cams that I would carry in with me?

Depends on the dealer. Some will some won't. As far as the warranty..... if the cams grenade the engine, and it can be proven that they caused the failure, your warranty is about as good as fake ***** on a 90 year old lesbian.

Ask your dealer.

the factory warranty covers the "factory cams".

if you modify the motor, you are likely on your own ( and this goes for a tuner and other common mods.

a dealer may make promises, get it in writing.

2.) cams are cheap, get new cams ( used may have damaged/worn surfaces- why chance it)

The dealer or indy may warranty their work(cam install) for a limited time.

As far as the factory warranty on the engine,it could be voided by the install.
I think it depends on the dealer and what breaks.

I agree. There are many opinions about what activities violate the warranty, and I think much of this decision-making lies with the dealer. I changed cams myself in 03/09 with take-offs like the OP is contemplating a few months after the factory warranty expired, then had major tranny surgery done six months later when the bike was 10 months out of warranty. The Moco approved the warranty work, partly because I had reported odd noises prior to the warranty expiration, but I'll wager the dealer didn't mention cams, PCV, or any other item that might've raised corporate eyebrows. They knew about all of the mods I had made and I never tried to hide any of it from them. I wouldn't plan on this attitude from just any dealer, though.

There is a federal "act" that says a manufacturer must prove that a modification was the point of failure before they can refuse your warranty claim. I used to know the name of the act, but I have forgotten it.

It's the Magnusen-Moss Act... The failure must have a direct impact with the so called part...

What everyone forgets is increasing horsepower stresses all the engine parts and voids the powertrain warranty even if not directly cam related. Mike
