Tough to learn lessons sometimes but it sounds like it all worked out for you in the end. I also learned the salvage title lesson on a used car I bought. Fortunately, I wasn't hurt either.
Yes you are right, but when I took to talking to him be phone,he gave me a better price, thus taking it off e-bay's listed policy, and away from the protection of e-bay,that was one lesson that I should have listed. The title was the first hint that it was a screwed deal, also it was the last thing I got,but it was always on the way.Took too much for granted, payed him too soon, too confident, and to stupid to see what was coming, and to far in to back out.
Wow that sucks big time. Sorry to hear you got boned. This is one reason I always ask for a photo or scan of the title before I even consider doing a deal on a bike, or if it's a local deal I ask to see it and I take a photo of it. Also check to make sure the title is in fact in the name of the person that's selling the bike, there are way too many bozos out there that never transfer it into their name because they don't want to pay the taxes on it. But if they do that and there are any title problems it's the new owner that's screwed because they have to try and track down the former owner to get it straightened out. That is one road that is to be avoided at all cost.
