Default idle rpm

just put the pcv and bct baffles on my 09 rk yesterday and bikes running good, until i had a few people notice that at idle the bikes idles alittle on the high side, maybe a few hundred more rpm then it probably should. is that normal after installing the pcv or is that something you need to fine tune on the pcv program? the pcv came from fuel moto so i got it mapped to my bike.

My idle rpm didn't change when I installed my PCV. Unplug it and idle the bike without it and see if it idles normally at 1000 rpm.

Not to hijack the thread but do the larger TC engines idle faster than the smaller EVOs and even the 88TC? I'd like to slow down my 103's idle and get that HD "potato potato" sound. Right now idling at 1000 I can't tell if it's my RG or a Honda VTX.

the high idle is required for number of reason, the most important is for oil pressure and volume, which is rpm dependent. Oil is part of the cooling system, removing heat from the hottest internal parts and carrying the heat away.

the traditional sound went away with hemi-heads and the old motor designs.

I'm gonna start selling cds of my panhead idling at 650 rpm.

Yeah I noticed the idle being a little higher with my PCV but if it didnt pickup I was going to do it manually...Im a firm believer in a healthy idle to keep the oil moving. For a bike to idle low enough to make the potato sounds your not moving it enough to keep a good flow.....

I have the power vision on my 103 SG I dropped my idle to 900rpm which is the lowest recommended idle speed for a twin cam, it sounds better but it also helped with the vibration at idle im very happy with it at 900rpm.

The PCV has no direct influence on idle, and AFAIK this adjustment can be made only with flash-based tuners that can tap into the ECM's idle parameter. OTOH, later model bikes have a limiter built into the ECM that prevents going below a certain value. I'm not sure what that is for any given year model, but my '07 can go down at least to 850, and 900 is usually considered the minimum for keeping a safe oil pressure. At 850 my bike doesn't idle particularly well and there isn't even a hint of the "potato-potato" sound that I had with my old carbed Evo when it idled at 875. I've settled on 950 as a good idle speed for my current bike. I don't even think it's possible to get the old Harley lope anymore with modern EFI bikes, but if anyone has accomplished it I would like to see and hear it on a video.
