Tuning Effects on Fuel Economy

Thanks to the OP for the data, I can relate to wardspartsworks about the E0/E10 issue. I experienced at least a 10% increase in mileage. Iclick, I'm really suprised that you saw no milage gain. May have gotten E10 even though it was advertised as E free. Also I noticed my oil temp was about 10* cooler with the E0.

Once I upgraded the cams and got a new map the map from FM had -2's in the cruise ranged and I was getting what I described as a miss. In reality it was late detonation at certain RPM's (2700-2800) and throttle position. So I set the -2's to 0 and so far it hasn't happened again. Now I am thinking I can add some more advance to get it to perform a little better and increase the mpg.
I bumped the cruise range up to 1's today and it ran good, no pinging. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer high 80's and I am going to bump up again to 2's and see how it runs. I can't see me going any higher than that and I want to see how it runs in the really warm weather.

This is the first time for me. Before the cam upgrade my ignition table had 2's in the cruise range and when I got in higher altitudes out west I started getting pinging so I had to remove some advance down to 0's.

I remember in my early years of stock car racing, I had a Pontiac 350 that I ran at 54 degrees total advance without any ping. Conventional wisdom back then said somewhere around 40 degrees was the max.

I know this is an old thread, but feel the previous posted information is very informative and useful for many. My reasoning for posting this thread again, is to couple the information here with my goals, which are simple. Keep my performance but adjust the tune to where I can obtain the best mileage I can.
When stock, my bike only got 40, which is mainly due to the back roads, starts and stops, shifting and rarely getting into high gear. With that said, once I installed the cams and had a tune done, the bike ran great but I lost 6 mpg. On top of that, the bike became a pig when the temps reached 85+. I have a PCV and have fixed the performance to where the bike runs good well into the upper 90's. I still only get 35 mpg. My question is; on this regimented loop I ride, can timing help me get more mpg, without sacrificing performance? Thank you for any positive input.
