Ya i do agree an oil cooler would be the best route to go! As far as the XIEDS go ive heard really good things about them especially if your just adding slip ons and or air cleaner i heard they work really well.. Im also going to look into the oil cooler! I would imagine it would extend the life of my engine by cooling it down!

It's oil not water.

I don't know what "normal" is supposed to be but I got used to seeing 220 - 235 in my 88b with the H-D dipstick analog gauge.

Normal.... I was actually higher when I first bought the bike. Previous owner had switched pipes and put a stage 1 SE a/c on bike but never had it tuned. Installed PCIII, changed pipes and had it tuned, also switched to Amsoil and I run anywhere from 230-250 now.

Borderline. I feel once it gets to 260 It is starting to go High, but these bikes run hot most of the time.

Good synthetic oil, oil cooler, proper maintenance, and non-abusive driving habits and the engine will last a long time with those temps. I hang with several people that regularly take very long trips every summer through the hottest areas of the country and have been doing that for many years and they get well over 100k miles out of their bikes. They trade them in or sell them when the rest of the bike starts falling apart but the engines are still running strong. It's an air cooled engine after all.

That said, there is nothing wrong with trying to lower the temps either.

I would not push conventional oil beyond 250F, and prefer to keep it well below that. I believe it is every 10 dgerees beyond the the fluid's limit, will cut its life in half. If you follow the prescribed fluid change interval of 5000 miles, and your dino oil gets up arount 270F, you'll need to change it at 1250 miles. If your "normal" oil temp is above 250F you might consider synthetic or some type of cooling option.

That's a gooD point and true.
A real break in could take 10 k.

I remember my old fat boy became a new machine at 10 k! She came alive!
