Oil Temp 257 - Normal or YIKES?

Great advice here so far. I would up the protection with a full synthetic (Like Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50) and form a plan of attack on the tune issue, which is probably lean.
Now would be a good time to put together a plan for your next performance upgrade which if properly tuned/dyno'd will produce more power, fun, and cool that baby a bit. Nothing like a little more zip in the doo dah!

Thanks for the responses. Was thinking of going with a full synthetic and now think I will. A little short of cash for a tuner right now but maybe a ViED will help with enriching the fuel flow. What can anybody tell me about a low temp thermostat? Tried searching for it but no joy. Is this a HD part? Part number? Thanks for all input and help!!

I see no mention of an oil cooler, that's the key to keeping them (reasonably) cool. Well, that and the aforementioned "low temp" thermostat. The XIEDS will help, but they're a poor substitute for a programmer with the proper tune. At best, it's a bandaid fix. (The comment about the XIEDS is just my opinion, I'm sure others will chime in with theirs. ((Flame suit ON!))

I have the 2011 version of your ride. Was out today in 80+ temps ran about 40 miles at 70 mph and checked my gauge when I stopped. 223 deg.
Around town, I hit temps of 260.
Difference between our bikes is that I got rid of stock pipes, got a tune, and I'm running Amsoil in the crankcase.
With your stock setup, you can expect high temps.
As others have said, switch over to a good synthetic, and when you get the cash, shitcan those stock pipes.

I've from the "Shovelhead Days", back when we used to run straight 60wt oil.
When the synthetic oils were first introduced, EVERY H-D service tech that I talked with adamantly declared that I should NOT use this in a H-D engine!
Just recently, I was talking to a tech who told me that one of their customers rode his S/E to Las Vegas and the engine got so hot that he thought it was going to quit running so he managed to get to the dealer and they drained out the synthetic and (unconfirmed) filled the enging with straight 50wt. oil and it ran cool enough that it wasn't trying to stall out.
I normally run 20w-50w (dino) in my bike but in the summer months here (Michigan) I run the straight 50w also.
Just my opinion (but it's my bike) I don't buy into this so-called "three hole" oil.
I put chaincase oil in the chaincase, motor oil in the motor, and transmission oil (Red Line Shockproof in my Baker) in the transmission and I change all of them at about 3,000 miles.
