2008 Street Glide with 38,000 miles. Took trip from St Louis To Clayton GA and back this weekend and all of a sudden I get this whinning noise or something close to it when I'm in 5th gear, didn't do it before. I can hear it more when I accelerate. Does not make the sound in all the other gears. Has anybody else had this problem?

 

Had the same issue with my 07... Dealer said normal?...do a search, lotsa threads on it

 

Fifth gear has always been the noisey one. I think it had something to do with it's being a bevel gear. You can still hear the whine in 5th gear on the 09's (6 speed transmition) but I believe they changed the gear in the 10's to get rid of the noise.

 

That's what the dealership said also. My concern is that this is the first time I have heard this noise since I bought it. Where was the noise the last 38,000 miles?

 

They went to a helical 5th gear in 2010 to solve this problem, only choice really is to get used to i.
