Default Eitms

Hitting a few stop lights and riding slow through town on a 65 degree day today, I noticed a change in my idle cadence that made me think the EITMS activated. But I never felt the bike got very hot. It seemed cooler than my old 88. I did not even need to open the vents on the lowers. Given that the EITMS is supposed to engage at 284 degrees, it does not seem possible. Can this thing go off at lower temps?

From your description it sounds like the EITMS engaged, CHTs spike rapidly when stopped or moving slowly regardless of ambient temp. It doesn't go off at a lower ET(CHT). 65 is pretty cool, kinda tough to feel the heat.

When stopped and idling, ambient temperature definitely has some effect but not as much as you might think on CHTs. I've found that a little breeze on an otherwise warm day will do more to keep the CHT down and triggering of the EITMS than a lower ambient temperature without the breeze. This is only an observation I've had, not a scientific fact.

Thanks for the input. Just never had a bike get that hot before, and to not even feel it on my legs or from under the seat.
Anyone else have an opinion?

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend. The sun is up, the bay is beautiful and the air is warm. A great day for a ride and perhaps some good BBQ and a cold beer.

Have the same bike as you do and noticed mine doing it a couple days ago with the temperature at about 75 when I sat at a light that was a little long. Bike did not feel hot at all and I even had a mesh jacket on at the time. Seems normal. Would not be concerned.

All is normal. Mine does that and now I am used to it. I can even tell as the rear cylinder begins to cool down.

You manually activate the EITMS so it's engaged/ready to kick-in when conditions arise, but for OP - seems like your bike's running hot...285 engine oil temp??? Bit high @ 65 degree ambient temp...

Ok........I am lost.

My '09 ultra classic manual says:
"A"
Turn ignition on
Push engine Run/Stop to RUN (Do not start enginge.)
Push Throttle to Roll OFF position and HOLD
Afta abt 3 seconds the cruise cmtrl lamp will flash green (enabled) or repat above and it will flash red (Disengaged)

The above is when the engine is OFF. Well if the eng is OFF then neither cylinder is running. 'dah! EITMS is supposed to shut just the rear cylinder not both.

"B"
On the HD website it says to shut off the rear cylinder, while running but either with clutch in or in neutral roll the throttle OFF max way clockwise AND hit the Cruise button.

Does this all mean if you do "A" alone nothing happens but it gets ready for whenver u do "B" above?

Is the above what is going on? I do not want to experiment with my bike just in case I scerw things up.

Is the above the total story?
