The tires with higher grip design will naturally have less milage life.

How are you guys getting such mileage out of a tire? I got 7500 on my last Metzler 880, and it really should have come off a few hundred miles sooner.

Metzlers, Avons and many others are a much softer compound, which is why people like them so much, they stick...The Dunlops generally have a much denser compound and stiff side walls which helps them last longer, but they don't ride as well as a Metzler or Avon does. Its a trade off. The Dunlop for me on a touring bike does what I need so I stay with them. I had Metzlers on my Dyna and Softail. Didn't last as long but really stuck to the road.

Oh and to the OP....I'm really glad you made it through ok with that tire. That is a little too worn for comfort.

Well I used to run Dunlops on my FB. I never got more than 6K - 7K out of 'em.

But......I am more of an aggressive rider than some. I know that is part of the problem, but 16K miles out of a rear tire? Damn!

For me Dunlops (402) go around 10,000, Metzelers (880) 7-8,000, and Michelin (Commanders) 6-7,000. Was thinking on Avons but my wrench says they get the best performance but the worst mileage. I,ve had the Dunlop Elite 3 recommended so I'm order a set up to try. These are on my Road King with Tour Box no two up riding.
