Default 5th gear whine/whiring noise

SO i went on a trip from Pensacola fl to Roanoke VA 12.5 hrs or rain later I arrived but about 9-10 hrs into the trip i stopped to warm up/fuel up (in that order) and when I went to get back on the on ramp I hit 5th gear and started hearing a whining/whiring noise coming from the bike, I assumed it was just my imagination as the bike didnt feel or drive any different but when i made it to roanoke i was cruising in 5th and i kept hearing it, next day same thing. I did a complete fluid change and took it for a ride it was less noticable but still there and only in 5th gear, I rode the bike back avoiding 5th as much as possible.

Im hoping someone else has had a similar issue and can give me some insight as to with it might be. My bike is a 2009 Road king with 7500 miles on it, I had the 5k service done by the local HD stealer and I changed the fluids again at about 6800 miles and have confirmed that it is not my imagination.

any help would be appreciated.

What was the MPH and RPM in 5 gear when you were riding?

Not sure of the RPM but I usually ride 5th when im doing 52-62 mph the first time I noticed it I didnt hit 5th until i was doing about 70 because i was coming on a short on ramp. It makes the same noise throughout the rpm range. After i changed the fluids I took it from about 50 mph to 75 in 5th just to verify it didnt go away at any point.

5th gear whines in all the six speed gearboxes. It's the way the gear is cut. It's diffent than the other gears

Are you using H&D Sny3 or other oils? That may be the problem. You may want to try the Spectro 6 speed transmission oil. Took the gear whining out of my New 2010 Electric Glide with 2100 miles and have not looked back since.

I also hooked up my riding bros and all agree in the Spectro oil. It is what Baker transmission recommends in their transmissions.

Using Amsoil with the severe gear in the tranny.

I may be wrong, but more than 55 MPH in 5 gear is kind of pushing the gear box more than normal.
You may notice that the bike will pull hard (rough sound) in low gear at high RPM.
70-75 MPH in 5 gear! I am afraid that you have pushed the gear to work more than what it is designed for.
As I understand, the whine (5 gear) is not gone away after you've changed the fluid. Is the riding condition at a slower speed or at the high speed (70 -75 MPH), as you've mentioned?

I believe they changed to a helical 5th gear in 2010 specifically to solve 5th gear whine

55-60 in fifth is where i usually shift, the 70-75 i mentioned was just seeing if it did it through the entire rpm range.
