Looking at New Street Glides with High Miles
I am currently looking at purchasing a HD Street Glide. Currently the bikes that are within my budget have roughly 30,000 to 50,000 miles on them.
Are these bikes that you would buy with that amount of miles on them. Do I need to save more money and purchase one with less miles that will last me longer?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. If I was going to ask a seller about this, they will tell me what I want to hear.
Thanks,
Robbie

You didn't say what your budget is; sure, always try to buy the lowest mileage bike, but depending on what you want to spend, they may well represent bike with 30k-50k miles on them. As others are pointing out, how the bike was maintained and ridden can be for more important then the mileage on the odometer. For example, my personal opinion is I would rather have a bike with 30k miles owned and properly maintained by one owner than a rental bike that only has 15k miles on it. Rentals tend to be ridden hard and put away wet, far too often.

I would take your low end (30k) as the highest I personally would be willing to go, and only then if it was well taken care of and had a good maintenance history. Some people can tear a bike up in 10k miles and others baby their rides to 100k+, so it really depends on how it was cared for.

Another possibility is to find one with lower miles in a paint job that isn't so popular.
(That's how we ended up with our SG with 1340 miles, ABS, security, optional wheels. Yeah it's purple, but we're enjoying riding it for a lot less than the "popular" paints, and I figure I'll change the paint later on anyway.)

A lot of Harley owners keep maintenence logs, or receipts from when they purchased or had service work done. If you are looking at a higher mileage bike, ask the owner to show you their service log. If they can produce it, consider the bike and look over the maintence to see if it was done and the proper time. If they have no service log or receipts, then walk away.

I purchased my 08 SG with 30,000 miles on it and it looks like it is brand freaking new. Before committing to buy I asked to speak to the original owner. The bike was bone stock and used for roads trips; Stugis, New Orleans, etc. All maintence was done according to manaul and he said he had zero issues with it. Without this information I may have kept looking. Mileage really doesn't bother me, how something is taken care of means more.
