Default Fairing screws...

Last time I had my bike in the shop they replaced the radio...when the tech replaced the lower right inner fairing screw (inboard of the right fork strut)attaching the outer fairing he cross threaded it!

ALL THE WAY IN!!!!!

I tried to remove this screw and could feel that the post that holds the female end that is embeded in the plastic fairing is moveing under the pressure of removal? My gut feel is that if I continue to try and remove this screw with the amount of torque that I'm applyingit may break the fairing post?

I dunno? Seems that there could have been a better design here? Maybe DZUS fasteners (for those familiar with military aircraft)?

Do not try to take it out. Take it back to the dealer and let them try to remove it. If they crossthreaded it, they gotta replace it, no question.

Very Common mistake for persons not familiar with the fastener set up on the fairing. Very unacceptable for a dealer to do this, but not surprised either. take it back and raise some hell with them, they should know better. Realize that they will just epoxy the inner knurled female piece back into fairing. Be carefull the next time you perform any fairing work after this.

Somewhere on this forum there is a thread on fairing fastener repair inserts from Harley. Maybe just call the dealer.

I'm in agreement in letting the dealer fix their mistake. It is a lot easier starting the inside lower screws cross threaded than it is the right way.

That's why my bike doesn't go to the dealer I'd fix it myself and make the dealer pay for it, or bring it to another dealer and have it fixed and have the other dealer pay for it.

I work on my bike JUST for that reason, don't trust young tech's, but I had no choice with a warranty repair for the radio.

Take it back to the dealer and hopfully they will repair it.
When my dealer replaced the fuel gauge, the tech stripped one of the screw holes.I found this out to late.
Next time the fairing is off I'm installing threaded inserts.

Threaded inserts? Is this a MOD that can be made to the lower fairing screws?

The upper inner fairing screws (just inboardof the fairing mounted mirrors on SG)have a metal receptacle...I feel this would be an advantage for the lowers if possible.

Just went to the store that did the warranty work...I realy didn't want anyone wrenching on it for the fix, they gave me an insert that replaces the one that got mucked up.

Seems like an easy fix...old one pulls straight out and the new one threads in with a straight slot screw driver.
