Default ABS vs. non-ABS gauges and warning light

I've had a couple of threads here regarding installing take-off silver faced gauges. I actually bought and installed a set about a year ago, and had the ABS light come on and stay on when the motor was running on my non-ABS Ultra. No one could come up with a resolution or a reason why at that time, so I put the OEM black gauges back on and the light cycled off.

I recently posted an update, based on a conversation between me, my local dealer and H-D customer support. I was told that brand-new, the same gauges fit an ABS equipped model and a non-ABS model, but that once the ignition is turned on, the speedometer and tachometer both 'learn' that the ABS model has a sensor. When you then take those gauges off and install them on a non-ABS model, the ABS light will cycle on and then stay on because it's looking for the ABS sensor that was there but is no longer there. I was told that there is no way to 'unlearn' or 'reflash' the gauges back to a new, non-ABS state.

I've come across a seller that says that per his dealer, all the gauges are the same (yes, that's correct) and that the gauges are capable of going from an ABS model to a non-ABS model with no ABS 'light-on' issues.

Since it's a popular change-out, can anyone here with a 2009 2010, 2011 or 2012 Touring model tell me if they changed out the OEM black gauges to the silver-faced gauges, going from an ABS equipped model to a non-ABS model, and did they have any ABS light issues?

I'd really like to get a set of gauges and not be locked into finding a set only from a non-ABS bike.

Thank you

gauges are the same until you put the tach on an abs equipped bike. I screwed up my buddies non abs tach by putting it on my abs bike to test it . after that abs light stayed on all the time on his bike and it threw a u1040 code.Gauge worked fine on my abs bike.Dealer couldn't undo it so the only solution was a replacement tach. Hope that helps

Thanks stonesmith; that's consistent with what I've been told by Harley and my local dealer. I just wanted someone else who has done the install to let me know so I'd know first-hand.

Thanks again!

Same here bought ABS and installed on NON, light never goes out.
Don't limit your search just buy what you can and if ABS gauge swap faceplates and trim rings. About 30min job while both are out.

Maybe I read it wrong but I thought he wanted to replace the BLACK EG non-ABS gauges with SILVER SG ABS gauges.
IF that is the case removing bezels, needles, and faceplates, then reversing order except putting silver on stock and black on ABS one that light stays on WILL work. He will have stock gauges with correct ODO just with silver faceplates and chrome bezels on them to match other 4 SG gauges he purchases.

sorry, i misunderstood what you were saying. yeah, that would work, but seems like a long hard road to get there..... plus, i think i would send that to one of the 'pros' to do instead of risking screwing up my gauge.
