Default Can I Overfill My Tank?

Any downside to filling that 6 gallon tank all the way to the top to max out the range? I mean the TOP! Leaving just enough room for the gas cap.

I all ways wonder about this myself. I figure if you fill to the top and go for a ride, no big deal. But if you fill to the top and store it, not so good. Although I do usually fill past were the pump shuts off, I don't fill to the top.

Yep, good question! My '06 Deuce has a overflow tube about a half inch from brim of gastank top which leads down the frame to back under the bike.
Don't ask how I found out...

usually the fuel comes from a tank which is cooler than the air temp at the surface.

pump the fuel up and it'll expand, into a tank on top of a hot motor, it'll expand more.

( this expansion is why they suggest you not top off the tank on your car)

on our bikes the overflow is drained by a hose to the ground

IF you are going to be leaving the gas station and keeping the bike upright ( like interstate riding) you can hold the bike upright, squeeze every last drop in.--- and blast off right away--- after 10 or 15 miles you'll have consumed enough fuel to lean.

I have done this when fuel range was an issue.

I do it almost always. Knock on wood, never an issue.

Maybe softail is different but I fill to the bottom of the hole but if I fill it up into the threaded portion it will chug pop and miss for the first mile or so. FWIW.

I think some of newer cali bikes have charcol canisters and I would bet that over filling those bikes might clog up the canisters after a while. I don't have a cali bike so I fill mine to the brim. it is funny tho as it takes a lot to get it filled up to the brim.

Fuel vapors are stored in the canister and drawn into the motor to be burned.
