I only use my GPS when I go on longer rides which also means I have my windshield on the bike. I didn't want some gawd awful ugly appendage on my bike so I mounted a Ram-Mount ball on the windshield. I used an H-D Deutsch male/female connector that is 1amp fused. The GPS is in a great position and is somewhat protected by weather even though it's a Zumo and doesn't need it. I've had this setup for 7 years and it's worked great!

Here are some pictures, hope it makes sense.

Do you remember what ball mount you have here? What does the other side of the windshield look like? Nut with nylon insert?

The Ram Mount won't scratch your bars. It's a rock solid mount, highly recommend it.

Since I originated this thread, thought I'd update with the setup I decided on:

If you like chrome (don't want something "gawd awful" - heh) and a streamlined look, the eCaddy mount might be of interest to you: http://www.leadermotorcycle.com/motorcycle-gps-mounts/
