Default Help with foot peg clamp install on highway bar?

Any suggestions on the best way to keep the foot peg clamps from marring the highway bar is appreciated.

Thanks.

Only way I have found is to not put the dang things on but that's not really much of an option. Not tryin to be a smartazz just ain't found a way to not scratch the bar yet, tried a bunch of crap that didn't work!

As long as you clamp them tight in their permanent position and don't allow them to spin while you're doing it, they won't leave any marks. Just have someone hold them on loosely while you get comfortable and mark them. To get them even, use a short level and run it along the top of the engine guard bar and take measurements from the level to the top of the peg mount that you know is good, then duplicate the measurements on the other side. At least that's how I did it and it worked out great for me.

Get them where you want them before you tighten them down...if you tighten them a little and think you can move them just a little for that last little adjustment, they will leave a mark. Probably not too bad though.

I don't worry about that. I put mine in the right spot before I tightened them down, and I have no plans on ever removing them. I can see it being a concern if you're going to take them off all the time, or move them around on the bar. But if you're going to do it once and keep it there for the life of the bike, then it's a non-issue.

Try a wrap or two of a old inner tube cut to the width of the clamp.

No easy fix. I tried wrapping the bar with silicone tape but the clamp won't close well. Be careful since it did leave a little scar on my bar. I can live with it.

Thanks for all the inputs. They all make very good sense.

I use wide electrical tape, trim it to width, then affix it to the inside of the clamp. Use enough pressure on the clamp while you're making adjustments, then tighten after your final adjustment. No bar scars!

I wrapped the highway bars with duct tape to make sure the pegs were in the proper location. Once I rode the bike awhile and got the pegs in the correct location, I tightened them down and removed the extra duct tape.
A little W-D 40 removed the excess tape adhesive and no problems since.
