What's the sense of startin it in gear anyhow?
LET IT WARM UP.....THEN pull the clutch lever in, wait a few seconds, THEN put it in gear...
It's obvious you don't know much about bikes, as you stated you tried adjusting the clutch from "what you read on the net".....get a shop manual....IF you have tools, and IF you're mechanicallly inclined, and IF you want to learn about the machine that's between you & the ground!

Normal clutch operation
It's normal operation esp. when cold. I usually leave my Road King in gear when it is parked so it doesn't roll forward or back. When I get on the bike and it is cold, I move it forward or back so that it isn't putting pressure on the gear and then shift to neutral. If it is hard to find neutral using my foot, I have had better luck using my hand.
