Default Thoughts on why the engine light would come on?

So right before bike week (and making the last payment on it, Murphy's Law), the engine light would come on (2005 EG Standard, Stage 1 kit).

Now it would only come on when I'll pull the throttle when I was already going about 70mph. I'd bump it to 75-80, the light would come on for about 10 seconds, and then go off. And...it would only do that in the first maybe 10 minutes of riding - and obviously on the freeway at those speeds.

Any thoughts on why that would happen? Right before bike week I went ahead and serviced it (oil, primary and tranny) with no problems. The light seemed to go off for a few days in that scenario above, but occasionally pops up - again only when I'm just on the bike.

Think it's just the bike warming up, or something more? It never happens after I've been riding for a bit, or if the bike is warm (say I make a stop, and then get back on the freeway).

No but I would check to see if it threw a code then you'll be closer to finding the answer to your question.

thats why the light came on, because there is a fault code. you are having a malfunction with something that effects emissions, thats what a check engine light is for, no other reason. it won't come on if you have a rod knock, or if you're leaking oil. Only emission related issues. a bad map sensor or throttle switch, can while effect the running also creates an emission problem, hydrocarbons too high ect. whats happening is one or more of the sensors has gotten out of spec and no longer matches the range built into the ecm. once that range is surpassed ( or not met) on at least 2 drive cycles, light come on. get it checked and fix it and move on, not a huge deal!!!

The problem is no code pops up when I check! That's the most frustrating part.

Are you sure you know how to check for codes? In all my years if the light comes on it has set a code even if it is only a few seconds on time. Only other thing I can think it could be is a malfunctioning/shorted light. Soft codes will go away if they don't see the problem again but almost all will not reset until no issues are seen for 50 or more engine starts. There is probably not a code for a shorted light.

Electrical problems will also cause the check engine light to come on. In those cases, the battery light usually also comes on, but not always. I'm surprised it's not showing a code.

I had a 05 RG that the engine light would come on intermittently. It ended up being a spark plug wire that was not seated on the plug all the way.

Yeah I'm a dummy, found the error code (kept skipping over one of the sections). It was a P1353 code - Front Cylinder - No combustion EFI. So looks like something with the spark plug, wires, coil, or possibly the ECM is fried. Hopefully just a plug or the wires.

Thanks!
