Buy a new headlight, like a Truck lite or the HD one.
The truck lite is $245 and the HD one is $500, or get rid of the trim ring.
Either one will buy a lot of light bulbs.
Your choice..
I tried the same thing, and opted to ditch the trim ring
as I did not like the big gap either.

This is a gap that comes out only through prayer, fasting, beer, or swearing. Or some combination of those....
What has worked best for folks is to loosen the stock trim ring so that the lip on the new one will seat under it. Then run your hands all around the circumference of the trim ring to make sure that is is evenly seated.
It seems that there is enough variability between the stock setup and the new trim rings during manufacturing that some folks never quite get the gap to close. But most of us can at least get it tolerable with careful installation.

Don't really get this. I have installed the frenched and visor trim ring on several bikes on 3 different style headlights and have never had the issue with any gap.
-Loosen stock trim ring as much as possible without completely removing it
-Take the screw and nut out of the new trim ring and slide it over the stock ring until it "snaps" into place
-Put the screw and nut back in the new trim ring and tighten it up until you just have enough room to fit a screwdriver between the gap
-Now tighten the original trim ring screw
-Finally tighten the new trim ring.
No gap
Not as easy to see but no gap here either
Gapless
Barely see but there is no gap on this one either.
