Default Smoked Tail light

Ok I Picked up a smoked tail light lens for my 04 Electra Glide and it didnt come with a bulb. I picked up a 3157 red led bulb from autozone, put it in and it is to close to the lens. It fits but dosen't fill the lens with light, just a small quarter size dot in the middle. Looked at supper bright and dont know what one to get. Anyone running a smoked lens that could help? Also am I going to have any problems running that kind of led?

Just did a smoked lay down on my Road King and the LED bulb it came with had the same problem as you. I put in a red incandescent which seems way brighter and have had zero issues with heat/deformation.

Those led bulbs that you buy in the auto stores are garbage. There's only 1 diode facing the rear all the other ones are around the bulb therefore giving all the light off to the sides and only a drop to the rear.
The way to go with led tail light is either buy a sealed led which comes as plug and play replacement, you can get red or smoked lenses, or you can keep your existing lens and buy a plug and play led board that goes behind the lens.

If it is a laydown do not run an incandescent bulb. It will melt the inside of the lends and more than likely cause a premature bulb burn-out. Did this many years ago. Didn't realize my tail was out until a motorist pointed it out to me. At night with zero rear lights is not cool.
