Let us know what the tech finds. Personally, I'd be upset to have a catastrophic TC 88 failure on a well-maintained motor.

I'm no tech, but I'd suspect a cam chain tensioner failure, leading to an oil pump failure, leading to gross overheating due to the absence of adequate lubrication, rather than excessive heat caused by a lean tuning condition.

In any event, hope you get it sorted out and back on the road.

Sorry about your mechanical problems.

I just had my 2000 Ultra updated with the S/E Hydraulic Can Tensioner Kit as a PM measure.
The bike has 77,000 miles on it but the original tensioners were replaced when I had the 1550 kit installed at about 40,000 miles.

The kit definitely increases the engine oil pressure.

As a benefit of having this done the mechanic discovered that I had a cracked head pipe. I had no idea as it made no more noise and I never saw the crack as it was hidden behind the heat shield.
For a few years the bike didn't want to idle at a higher RPM when it was first started but is does now.

The 1550 kit made a HUGE difference in torque of the engine.
A lot more throttle response reduces the need to frequently downshift to pass or going up small grades.

I've planned for a few years to buy a '13 but now that I have my old bike set-up for me I have the thought of starting over.

Good luckand I hope you're happy with the rebuild.

Sorry guys, been on a memorial ride for the last 3 days. No Internet until now.
Oil pressure was great and has been. I am sure it was running lean and running hard uphill and 2 up cooked her.

As far as the SERT everyone wants more money to tune it with a SERT. Thinking the Power Commander will be easier to find someone to work on it if needed in a pinch.

He is starting the tear down this week, he said it is possible it was tensioner failure but won't know until he opens her up.

I will post more when he starts and more answers are had. Praying for no crank damage don't want to spend that much if I can get away with it.

Not really. The Power Commander only adjusts fuel and spark tables. The race tuner has way more bells and whistles and the TTS has even more than the race tuner. What's debatable about that???

Well turns out that the heat was probably generated by a lean tune by the PO. The bike had a fresh dyno when I bought it 2 years ago. Being my first FI bike I didn't think to have it tuned here in AZ after buying it. Cam chain tensioners were worn out and the originals but not the cause of the problem.

Here is what is going back in: 95 kit with Andrews cams, upgrade to new cam tensioner system and I have decided to go with the Thundermax even though the cost is about a grand more by the time we weld in the o2 bungs cost difference of the unit etc.. I do not want to pay for a dyno every time I make a change to the bike. Even though my indy says he makes more on dyno's down the road with a SERT or Powercommander, he feels the Thundermax is a great choice. Plug and play and ride away!

Now what to do while I am jones-ing without my ride for the next two weeks? Tinker with my 71 Bronco, maybe that will help. Or maybe NOT! Can't wait to get her back.

Well I got my baby back today! WOW! obviously I cannot get into the throttle yet but Holy Crap! I can tell the difference in just the 4 miles back to my office after picking her up. The Reinhardt pipes are louder and have more Pop (not Popping) and the power is instantly there.

I can't wait to break it in and see what she will do!
