Default First time buying shocks....any reason to avoid these....

was quite surprised how much rear shocks cost. I don't want to spend a lot. Found the Drag Specialty standard or heavey-duty shocks for $199 on DennisKirk - any reason to avoid these shocks...again I want to go cheap (I have a really big expensive summer bike trip planned and want to keep costs down).

Also - I notice that they come in 12.5 and 13 inch - which do I need and how do I tell?

Thanks

if you want to stick with a stock ride look for some low mile take off 13" HD air shocks on ebay .. look for 09 or newer . you can get them from $20 to $100

its easy to change them out , takes 30 min .

you could post on the HD classifieds your looking for some also

remmember max air pressure on older shocks is 35psi

50psi on on and newr shocks

You get what you pay for with suspension, especially on a bagger. Wait until you have the money for Ohlins.

Your stock shocks are 13", the shocks on a SG or RG C (lowered) are 12". soif you want a different look you can go to 12" shocks , but realize you will loose travel and the ride will suffer a little.

If I was going cheap Id buy the Progressive 412 shocks, IMO thy are better than what you had stock and can be found for about $ 130.00 from US Motoman on line. Progressive have a good reputation , Ive used them for years on a bunch of bikes. If you want a better shock go to the 440 Progressive but they will run about 400.00.

There are a lot of guys on this forum that are very happy with their 412 progressives and at 130.00 you cant beat the price

Im running Progressive 940 they run 450.00 but IMO are a great improvement over stock and have a lifetime warranty. Most will tell you the best are Ohlins and they are worth the $ and I believe this is true. I was on a budget and the Progressives are doing what I want , improved ride quality, improved handling, improved bottoming out, increased rear wheel travel over stock.

+1 on looking at eBay.
I got some new take-offs for my '02 Ultra last year ($100.00 shipped).

true - I was just fine with the stock ones on there though and I just need to be cheap today so maybe later I will make an investment in this area.

Thanks for all the info - I will definately look at the 412's - that price is well within my budget.

Hey - a couple questions for ya - dennis kirk site shows that the 412's will not fit my bike - am I missing something? Also, in reading about setting pre-load on these, does this mean I won't be able to use my air-adjust? (my bike is a 2000 FLHRCI). Thanks.
