leave it alone, they will go bad when they go bad, if you already have that many miles on it then you must have a good one. Just be sure to check your battery connections from time to time. I had one come loose and that was all it took to fry mine...When you do replace it, replace the the voltage regulator with it as a set...FYI

Thanks for the input, I'll roll with it for now. Just hate the thought of it going out on some lonely hwy in BFE. I change the primary about every third oil change I'll do the sniff test next time I change it.

You won't have to the sniff test. As soon as you pull the plug and it starts to drain and you smell a$$ its bad.

I know they changed to a 3 phase system near your year that is more reliable than the older system.

Anyone know exactly when the change happened?

When I had the 1550 kit installed in my 2000 Ultra at about 39,000 miles I asked about replacing the stator, which was still working.
I was told to leave it be.
THe following spring (about 1,000 miles later) the stator died.

I'm now at 77,000 miles and the stator seems to be working well so. I'll leave it be....again.

Just remember to check your amp gauge every time you check your oil pressure.

I've been through a couple of stators and I agree with if it ain't broke don't fix it, and if its going the smell will tell, also if you do replace it, make sure your voltage regulator and battery are ok, and not the cause for taking the stator out.

no, I would not replace a serviceable stator....understand what is happening...the stator has 3 coil, each with it's own run to the regulator. The maxi fuse is rated at 40amps....but it is connected after the regulator...so the stator is not protected....why should it be and what spec make sense....you can esitmate that each winding on the stator is good for about 13amps....so in theory...before a 40amp maxi fuse blows....an over loaded stator coil would be lit up like a lamp filament. what to do...install as stator fuse kit. cost is about 25 bucks in parts. The fuse kit will blow if your stator is over loaded. once you figure out the cuase of the overload condition..you replace the fuse.

Stop worrying, if its going to take a crap there is chit lot of things can go bad. Mostly I keep battery and tires in top notch condition everything else waits till it brakes.

At your milage it COULD go anytime, but of course, it could last until 100,000 miles. They are known to go bad but, would I tear the primary off to change a working stator, no. I DID however change mine out at 70,000 miles when the primary was already off to repair the shifter shaft seal. Mine would have been under warranty but like you, I don't want it to go bad on a trip. The warranty company got a bonus I guess.
