The maximum weight for an Ultra's front tyre is around 639 pounds, rear is 1019, so with bike weight of 889, plus riders at 380 and 230, 1658 plays 1499. So OP has a safety margin on his tyres of 159 pounds, even though the two of them may exceed the bike's GVWL.

I wouldn't be concerned about loading the bike up for that 5k mile trip. I don't imagine they are going to be attempting any record breaking speeds!

The economical and serious upgrade in ride quality and comfort is Ohlins #3-3s out back and fabrik8r's magic upgraded Intiminators plus springs up front.
+1! While it should be of some concern, even the tires have a safety factor built in. While I'm not saying nothing will ever happen, I have seen some long distance bikes carrying way more than they should be. We knew a guy years ago on a shovel bagger who rode all over the country with this girlfriend, combined, they were easily 700#, then they packed the thing like the Beverly Hillbillies truck, I'll bet easily another 250#. Not like it was a high speed traveler, but he hit almost every state and rode the hell out of it.

940's have 13 inches of travel but only a 12 inch stance. 440HD can be bought at 13.5 inches.

I couldn't find the GVWL on line, which I deduce is 1348 pounds (sounds low to me!), against an actual payload (apologies to Mr and Ms OP!) of 1499 pounds and tyre limit of 1658 pounds. Not good, but very doable, with care and attention.

Welcome aboard HatemOthman, from the UK!

Max on a couple of my past touring bikes have been rated not to exceed 330 lbs. I've overloaded them just getting on them myself. And mama ain't little either. Packing 50-75 pounds of crap and traveling normal highway speeds. No sweat over the years. Progressive air shocks always got the job done for me but there are probably better options out there nowadays. The stock shocks always left me wanting something better.

I have a 2011 UCL and my wife and I way about the same as the OP. We just put on a full length set of MOCO's premium hand adjustables. Did a 270 mile run last Sunday and never bottomed out once. I have it cranked up 19 clicks which is about 75%. Great inprovement over stock junk! $400 at most discounted online stores!

Now, that is a seriously good and to the point answer!

Thanks to all the posters! Yes I know we are a bit over the gvwr. I shopped around and actually the HD has a higher weight capacity than the Victory Vision and the BMW K1600GTL and some other bikes I looked at. I check the tire pressure regularly and never run worn out tires. When your my size you have to rely on the safety factor built into things like ladders and chairs! Haha. Hopefully soon I will lose enough to be below the GVWR. I have talked to Progressive and they recommended the 440's in 13 or 13.5". problem is that with the 13'5" I may have clearance issues with my V&H ProPipe HO 2 into 1 exhaust. I am sure I could probably space out the exhaust a little to make it work. I have not talked to the Ohlin guy yet. Who do I contact for the best deal on those? what is the approx. price difference between the Ohlins and 440's? Oh and for front shocks I heard a few replies about fabrik8er? Is he a sponser? Thanks for all the replies and help. I plan on putting a ton of miles on this bike this summer so I want to get it ready and make it as good as possible before this big trip.....Craig
