Switching from a Heritage to a Touring Bike
#41
I've owned both. Actually three.
2008 Heritage~ Loved it but comfort for the o\l wasn't there.
2011 Limited~ Loved it & was great for 2-up but the o\l still didn't ride much & I'm not old enough to be sportin a Grandpa Glide. I did love it though!
2008 Roadking~ Love it! Both of best worlds! Touring bike, cruise, locking bags, & can ride it around town in bar hopper mode or fully dressed for the longer rides. Going to eventually order a Dragonfly fairing & will truly have the best of both worlds!
Good luck on your decision. If money weren't an object I would just keep the King & buy a RoadGlide Custom-Yellow Chrome- & be done with it!

The dealer i bought the heritage from and where I'll get my next bike, has offered to let me take demos out for an hour or two, for each of the two bikes i am wanting to compare. No need to rent here. Having the demos for two hours each will give me the impressions to make a decision with. I think....
Most of my riding is within one hour of where i live. Planning on making 2-3 day trips once or twice a year. Cant make it to sturgis this year, but in the plans for 2013. Thats a 3 day ride one way.
Would love hard lockable sattle bags/ anti lock brakes/ stereo/ cruise control and solid wheels without having tubes in the tires and don't have to worry about torquing the spokes.
Haven't yet, but i can see myself on the side of the road with a flat, waiting for a tow truck, when i could just put a plug in the tire ( which i would have with me all the time) if i didn't have tubes.
A new bike is going to happen!!
Wonder when i should tell my wife......

I went from a Kaw drifter 1500 to my 2011 Ultra. Always wanted a HD. As for ride long trips are great with the Ultra. But I do miss the drifter for my shorter drives. I would say to rent one. The Ultra is heaver and seat is taller. There is more weight to the bars too. But you will love the ride just know it will be different

Sun was out and decent temperature, so i got on my bike and went to the local harley dealer. There was a new street glide, they just got ready to use as a rental and i got to take it out. What i found right away, is on how smooth the bike ran (all stock). Very different from the heritage...much much smoother, once i got moving that is. Couldn't help noticing the vibration at idle, but then i wouldn't be idling much except for at a red light. Brakes rock! Bike ran Smooth as silk...Seemed to have more pick up and go then my heritage with stage1. I found it to be much better handling and more balanced then my bike. I'm impressed.
Only negative i found is the windshield to be useless, but that could be fixed with a new higher shield.
Then the salesman let me have his just about new (600miles) electra glide ultra limited. Same vibration as it has the same engine. As far as i know, the heritage is the only bike with a balanced engine.
It too was smooth and comfy too. I can see why it is a long distance bike. Larger wind shield works for me. I didn't find it as being top-heavy at all. I did however have my hands full with it acting like a sail. It was quite windy and that thing all of a sudden was not comfy anymore, as i was busy controlling it. Had both front and side winds and passing trucks on the interstate at the same time was not exactly fun. Something for me to think about.....
Conclusion so far....I love the street glide for it's looks and smoothness. Handles great. (as is, without a larger wind shield)
electra glide ultra limited: the extra storage would come in handy, even when not on a long trip. I'm struggling with finding other things it did better then the SG.
I favored the Ultra limited up till today, now I'm leaning towards the SG, but still haven't completely made up my mind yet.

I owned a 2000 Heritage for 11 years. It was fine for me but after we rented a Ultra in Florida. My wife wanted me to buy an Ultra for her comfort. I had both bikes for a little while but the heritage was never ridden so I sold it. The only drawback on the ultra is the extra weight. After riding the ultra and hopping on the heritage , it felt like a mini bike. We now do a lot more longer rides then we used to. Another thing is the ultra did not scrape on curves like the heritage did.

I just upgraded from an '09 Heritage to a '12 Road Glide Ultra.
I must say, I never had a problem with how the Heritage rode. I took it on trips as long as 1000 miles each way and had no real comfort issues.
With that being said, I love my new RGU even more. I love having the ABS, sterero, fairing, 103 engine, etc. It feels like I'm doing 45mph even when I'm up around 75mph. It's definitely an easier bike to ride and it is much more comfortable. I also like having all my storage lockable and I prefer solid bags to leather bags as the leather ones look bad after a couple of years.
It really depends on what is important to you, but they both are good choices and will take you anywhere you want to go...

Well I rode a 2000 Heritage for 12 years and loved every one of the 66K miles I put on it. But last year I traded it in on a 2011 SG. The SG is a totally different ride and handling, better I supppose so but it's all in how you want to ride. The ST lets you feel the road and you know you're riding a mc. But the SG is just a much smoother overall riding experience. I'm glad I change, but I still have a 2000 Fat Boy in the garage that I will never get rid of.

Went from an '07 Heritage to a '10 Ultra Classic. All I can say it that the Heritage was more comfortable for me seat and handle bar wise. After 2 years still cannot get comfortable for more than an hour or so. To replace the bars and a new seat.......good down payment on another bike. Should have just spent the money for the 103 stage 2 kit for the Heritage. But the wife likes the Ultra better.
