The dealer that has my bike told me he only sees around 10-15% of the stock Dunlops that come in flat, are separated from the rim. He claimed other brands and other than stock on the large HD touring bikes come into his shop at a much higher separation rate. He said the more rigid the sidewall, the less likely the tire is to separate from the rim on deflation. He said his shop will only install stock HD Dunlops on touring bikes.

In my case, I had not noticed any deflation until the immediate wobble/tank slapping began. I thought/assumed immediately it was a blow out (again, only had 2-3 seconds to think about it, but I do remember thinking about it!). I had been travelling about 150 miles of interstate that day and I know there was no leak when I started out that morning.

I do have to find out how big the puncture hole is. Will let you know.

I lost my rear twice in 3 days in 2010 post-Sturgis.

the first was an honest flat, picked up a roofing nail.

the 2nd was due the the 1st tech mis-installing the valve core, which popped off at 80 MPH

Kept it up both times, much to the horror/amusement of my riding Pal.

Glad you are able to type today- rest and heel

Mike

One thing that makes me wonder is the tire pressure, 40 psi appears high to me, but then I am wrong most of the time. My front tire pressure is specified to 36 psi.
The bike manual calls for 36 in front and 40 in rear when fully loaded and I was fully loaded with gear since I had been gone for a week.

Glad to hear you are ok luckily it was cooler morning and those extra layers saved you from getting seriously hurt.I have same tires on my 07 and start to be worry because friend of mine they use police tires on their UCs and it suppose to have very strong side walls for flat protection separation from the wheel.

Glad your on the mend..I bet you had a bolt or something large make that puncture..I felt that the sidewalls on the E3s were pretty stout. But a quick deflation on a heavy bike is never good at highway speed.
