Default Speedo Cable ?

I have a '99 EG. My speedo just stopped working. Does anyone know where the problem is more likely to lie? I had the rear tire changed and while it was up on the jack we loosened the front wheel to check the axel. We loosened and moved the out a little and then moved it back. Anyone know what I might have done? Sounds dumb I know but figured I'd ask here as I don't have the tech manual at this point and I don't have a jack here at home just yet.

Thanks in advance for any possible help

I think the speedo sensor on that year is in the tranny.

the sensor is magnetic and may pick up steel particles from the gears wearing ( usually normal wear)- the fix is to remove the sensor and clean it.

Start there

a factory manual is a must- especially when you have an older bike which will be having more problems- and riders here may not be up on the variables on the '99.

The 99 is also likely to have the bracket for the tip over sensor break, ign. switch failure ( esp. if extra lighting is added up front) and main breaker failure. And all the cam bearing, cam bolt ( pre 10/98 builds) and cam tensioner problems--- oil pump alignment... pinion bearing etc

Thanks Mike, the micro is just what I needed. Only problem is I don't have a speed sensor where the diagram shows unless I am blind. There is a flat oval spot where it should be on the transmission case but no sensor. I found the speedo cable and drive unit though using the parts diagram but still no farther along chasing it down. May have to wait until I can get it lifted again to pull the front axel to check the speedo drive unit. I wish it was that sensor looks easy enough to get to if I had one...I will look again but am at a loss currently. Thanks again for bringing my attention to the Ronnies microfisch. I can usually fix things if I know what I am looking for but am relatively new to my Harley. Shop Manual is definitely high on the priority list.

Any other input will be gladly accepted

Also just noticed that although the picture shows the sensor, the part numbers are not listed in the parts list, methinks this may be because the picture is generic to the transmission but the list is specific to the year?

do you have a speedo drive unit on the front wheel then?

and a cable coming up into the fairing?

See, even my knowledge of 99's is suspect...

If so then the speedo drive probably got out of sync when you moved the front wheel

They switched to electronic speedometer on the 99 Road Kings, not till 2000 on the Electra Glides, so you still have the cable. Make sure you didn't disengage the tab that inserts into the wheel to turn the cable, otherwise you'll have to take off the outer fairing to see if the cable is turning. I've got a manual for a 99 you can have for $25, PM me if you're interested.

Thanks for clearing that up-- I did some work on my Pal's 99 RK, so that explains my confusion...

Hondo, buy that manual!

67054-98 about $28 at the dealer

Western NY is where people still know how to fix things, if you have an old timey speedo shop they can make a core for a few bucks.

( In PHX it's Dick's Speedo-Tach)
