Default 103 Oil Capacity

OK, I have a 96" motor in my '09 SG and the book calls for 4 quarts of engine oil with a filter change. I only run 3 1/2 quarts due to blow by.

Buddy has a '12 SG with the 103" motor and he tells me his manual calls for 3 quarts of oil. I told him he's full of doo doo and better reread it.

Who's right here guys, 103 is a 96 bored out some but the same block and pan, plus an oil cooler, right???

Your 2009 manual states to "initially add 3.5 quarts of oil." His 2012 manual states to initially add 3 quarts of oil." I'm guessing it is an error in the 2012. I'm going to poke around the corrections and see if it shows something

My 2010 shop manual says "initially add 3.5 quarts".

The capacity for the 103 is 4 quarts. The manual should be stating 3.5 on a full change with the filter. The 2011 manual states initially use 3.5 qts.

The harley manual says to add 3 qt then to check it and add as needed. So you start with 3 or 3.5, you still end up at the same place.

2012 Touring Models Owners Manual - pg 161, #9. Initially add 3.0 quarts (2.8 liters) of engine oil.

I was thinking it was 3.5 too.

+1 on above...Capacity said 4 quarts and the shop manual was kinda confusing with 3 quart stuff. I called my dealer service manager...he said dump 3.5 quarts in it and you will be fine. They were right. Dump 3.5 quarts and take it down the road. Check it hot. Just about right.

I've been doing 3 qts during a change and that puts me about 1/4 qt low - which is where I want it.
