im wondering if the higher oil fill number in the manual is more to do with the oil cooler addition than just the change from 96 to 103.

no, cause the higher number is with the 96, not the 103....

the overall capacity is the same (spec wise), just the manual tells you to start at a different place, 3 vs 3.5. like metalspike said, you're gonna end up in the same place anyway.

I run an oil cooler and have relocated my oil filter so I have added capacity. I dump in 4 qts total and that's where it's at.

It's Harley's way of fixing the oil blow by out of the air filters the easy & cheap way. Run the motor on less oil........

Just had it changed today . Took a little over 3 quarts with filter.. Checked it hot and cold and all is well...Just noticed the last time I had it changed at the dealer they charged me for 6 quarts ...Should always check my receipt ..No way did it take over 4

First off old thread. Funny how many posts have nothing to do with anything. Question was what do the manuals state for these two years. You had guys chiming in about every frigging thing including different motors. Ha.

As for 6 quarts, they changed the oil in the primary and tranny, is my guess. Not just the engine. If so bring the bike back to the dealer, and hand them the keys.

Just curious, our resident expert, but in a dry sump system (like Harleys are) what difference do you think the engine size makes regarding oil capacity?

I don't think it does if you build it.

The question was do differnt models or manuals have different quanities listed. Did anyone actually address the question in this thread?

I am pretty sure my owners manual and shop manuals have different amounts for my 01. The 3.5 vs 4 thing. Never heard of 3. But again do different years, models, or printings have different amounts of oil, was the question.

Not really sure why you brought up dry sump or pointed out Harleys have them. Maybe you read my post from this morning talking about dry sumps and learned something.

But with a dry sump, a long stroke would not effect the amount of oil the bike contains, because it is a dry sump. In case you were wondering. With a wet sump it might because the stroke would be longer, and the oil is underneath.
