You don't have to but if you want to do it right you really should pull the tank and run the wire under the tank inside of the plastic track that holds/protects all the wires.

I know I know, humor is good. Cut off the RCA and went high level input, now it rocks! Extremly happy!

Glad to hear, I called Rockford Fosgate to ask about the situation, and I won't even repeat the answer I got, the guy I talked to was not the person they should have answering phones in tech support, lol.
