Anyone know the size of the bolt that holds the seat?

That will also make it easier for thieves to steal your seat. I use a torx screw on mine.

hardware store bolt might cost you $.25.

They're cheap enough at the dealer that I bought 3 and keep them around the garage. They have built-in lock washers, too.
I also bought a box of 100 1/4 20 x 1/2" ss hex head bolts from McMaster-Carr. There are lots of these on the bike. I've replaced many of the torx bolts with these.

I used a 1/4-20X1/2 Torx screw.

Seems as though the combination of the new bolt having extra tight threads and the threads on the nut in the fender being extra worn was making the bolt go in feeling like it was cross-threading. After everyone's feedback including the guys I bought it from, I made sure it was going in straight and sort of cranked it figuring I'd replace the nut if I lost my gamble but it worked out - Thanks for the helpful advice

I'll use a screw driver with a little blue lock tight on the bolt so it doesn't vibrate loose
