I have a question about oil coolers!
Are they worth it?
I haven't heard that much good about the one JAG builds for Harley - With labor around 5 /6 hundred bucks!
I have a Indy shop here that turns the crash bars into a oil cooler? about 300 bucks total - He says he has been doing them for years with great results - He says the Harley coolers are useless. He had a pile of the HD one's out back in his boneyard.
Another Indy told me that they were all a waist of money - I didn't need one - just do a stag one & add a fuel pac of some sort.
What you say?

Jagg doesn't build coolers for Harley. HD coolers aren't the best performing heat exchanger but they aren't useless. Lot of people do the crashbar cooler but I wouldn't pay 300 bucks for it. An HD adapter is about 70, 2 barbed fittings at the hardware store and a piece of hose cant be 230. Whether or not they are worth it is up to you. You will find as many people who say you need one as you will those who claim they are useless.

I have a HD premium Oil cooler and have noticed a significant lowering of oil temps. Been very happy with it so far.
I would not really use a crash bar as an oil cooler. The interior of the crash bar was not polished or finished for that kind of service and I certainly would not run oil through it and put it back in my bike. My just be me. In addition, if you ever dumped the bike or minor crash that cracked the crash bar, then you would be leaking oil.

Only install an oil cooler on a Harley if you want it to last longer and run stronger.
Otherwise forget about it.
The first thing I do when I get a new HD home is install an oil cooler if it wasn't standard. I use the HD cooler with good results. The first one that I installed was on the 07 FXSTC. I have never seen over 215 on the oil temp gauge even in Florida during Bike Week in stop and go traffic on Main Street.

I installed the HD Premium Oil Cooler on my Heritage about a year and a half ago. Took a trip from MD-OH-and back last fall and got stuck for ~2 hours in accident traffic. Was getting pretty concerned that the bike was going to overheat but it didn't. I've gotta believe the oil cooler helped a little in that instance. Was never happier to get moving again - after all, air cooled bikes do need air to stay cool :-)
