Respoking Front Wheel: Get Chrome or Polished Stainless Spokes?
Sending my 21" front wheel to Buchanan's Spoke & Rim to have it respoked & trued.
For my stock 21" chrome hoop (that was just rechromed by Browns) it seems as though my two obvious choices are chrome spokes & nipples, or polished stainless spokes & nipples.
Having never done this (and not wanting to pay to do it again anytime soon), could Folks please give their opinion on the pros & cons of each, and which direction to take?
Thanks

Only go with S/S spokes and nipples. Polished are nice. The chrome ones will rust, than look like crap, and eventually break, unless you live in an arrid climate. The threads on chrome spokes and spindles will have fitment issues because of the plating on the threads and you will have more maintenance and repairs.

Will the polished stainless spokes & nipples look right at home against my nice, shiny chrome hoop?
What kind of maintenance is required to keep the the polished ss spokes & nipples looking decent?
Thanks

SS has a slightly yellower tint to it compared to chrome, but I really dont think on a wheel it may be distinguishable. Im not an authority on spoke wheels, dont care for them myself. But have been told forever it seems like if your going to go spoke, go with SS.
As far as keeping them clean, any good metal polish like mothers.

If I were dead set on having wheels with spokes, I think I would want stainless spokes. Fairly recently there has been a few reports that moisture that builds up in wheels over a period of time can rust the chromed spokes from the inside and have been reported to cause wheel failure while riding.

I have SS all over my bike and no one can tell me what parts are SS and what is chrome just looking at them. If it gets fine scratches in it over a very long time it can be buffed back to chrome easily. Get the SS spokes. All spoke rims require adjustments occasionally and usually can be done at tire change. If you are not re threading the entire wheel it is pretty easy with a chep truing stand to check for runout and hub center.

I have a 21 inch 80 spoke front wheel on my 99" FXR2. Chrome rim and hub with SS spokes. After 12 years the spokes still look good but I gave serious thought to replacing them with chrome spokes about a year ago. Problem was that by the time I paid for the chrome spokes, lacing and truing the wheel, I might just as well buy a whole new wheel. Most chrome wheels sold come with SS spokes. I used a shoe lace product that has cleaner/polisher embedded in the lace. You sit down with your favorite beverage(s) polish wheel and spokes for about an hour or so. You do have to stay at them or over time they begin to look pretty cruddy. That wheel DOES SHINE in the sun. Originally planned to get a 100 spoke wheel but glad now I didnt.
